Tourist guide

The Charente Maritime is home to some amazing natural wonders as well as famous tourist attractions.

The islands of Ré, d'Oléron and d'Aix, Royan with its superb port, white sandy beaches and sunny vibe, not to mention Rochefort and its rich history.

Don't miss a visit to the Corderie Royale, which in its heyday supplied the ropes for numerous great ships, and of course there's the famous Fort Boyard, a former maritime fortress and current TV show location.

And on Saturdays, you can stroll through the streets of La Tremblade and sample local produce at its traditional market.

And to enrich your stay, go to the surrounding markets:

  • In Mathes: local market Tuesday and Friday mornings in high season
  • At La Palmyre: local market on Wednesday and Sunday mornings in high season, night market on Wednesday evenings in high season
  • At La Tremblade: local market every morning except Monday in high season, market of flavors and creators on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in high season

Culture and heritage

Spotlight on Le Phare de La Coubre !
Located in the commune of La Tremblade, at the northern end of the Gironde estuary, this lighthouse is a must-see. Ten years after it was built (1895), marine erosion had begun to take its toll, so a breakwater had to be built to try and slow down the advancing waves. Unfortunately crashing waves continued to eat away at the coastline. The lighthouse was moved in 1904 and brought into service on 1 October 1905. Height: 64 m Number of steps: 300 Lamp power: 250 watts Light range: 28 miles (52 km).

Head along the tourist trail and discover one of our region's greatest treasures: La Coubre Forest. This majestic forest covers 4,820 hectares and stretches from Ronce-les-Bains to the La Coubre lighthouse. This state-owned forest is managed by the Office Nationale des Forêts and is mainly home to maritime pines and evergreen oaks. You'll find a variety of animals in this forest (deer, roe deer, wild boar, etc.) and it's the Royannais region's green lungs.

Numerous hiking trails, cycle paths, mountain bike circuits... head off the beaten track and take in breathtaking views of the ocean.
